Miami-Dade To Have The First Electric Rapid Bus System In The U.S.

South Dade residents are about to experience a major upgrade in public transportation.

Miami-Dade County has announced the launch of Metro Express, the region’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system — and the longest fully electric BRT line in the United States.

Starting October 27, the new service will provide a fast and efficient connection along the heavily traveled U.S. 1 corridor, running 20 miles from Florida City to Dadeland South. Operated by the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), Metro Express is designed to reshape daily commutes for thousands of residents.

The system will operate on a dedicated bus lane, separated from traffic by safety barriers and prioritized at traffic signals during peak hours — promising faster, safer, and more reliable travel.

Modern Stations and Rider Amenities

Metro Express includes 14 state-of-the-art BRT stations featuring:

  • Climate-controlled waiting areas
  • Modern design with shaded areas
  • Bicycle access and parking
  • Water stations
  • Free Wi-Fi and phone charging
  • Pre-paid boarding for a smoother ride

A $100 Million Investment in the Future

The project was made possible through a $100 million investment from local, state, and federal partners, including:

  • Miami-Dade County (via the half-penny transportation surtax)
  • Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)
  • Federal Transit Administration (FTA)

“This service will revolutionize transportation in South Dade,” said Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “It offers a smarter, cleaner, and more connected way to reach job centers, schools, parks, and other key destinations. Metro Express represents a new era of public transit — where sustainability meets efficiency, and every ride is powered by smart technology. It’s infrastructure designed to meet both today’s demands and tomorrow’s growth.”

Opening Celebration Set for October 22

To commemorate the launch, county leaders, transportation officials, and community organizations will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, October 22 at one of the new BRT stations.

DTPW Director and CEO Stacy L. Miller emphasized that safety and convenience are central to the Metro Express experience.

“From level boarding and well-lit platforms to easy navigation and traffic signal priority, this system is built for a smoother, more modern commute,” said Miller.
